In our distracted world there is a movement towards mindfulness, being more present in the moment. The American Psychological Association lists key benefits of mindfulness as enhanced focus, cognitive ability, relationship satisfaction and reduced stress. These are all factors we can benefit from in our daily lives.
Mindfulness is often looked at as meditation alone, however, it is simply being present and not looking to the past or the future.
Focussing on your impact and treading more lightly on the planet is a great way to make a difference in the world and to be more mindful. When on an eco-journey it is important to be aware of what is going on around you. When at a restaurant it can be saying no to a straw and napkins while you are ordering, reading your labels and researching brands when shopping, disposing of waste responsibly and going out of your way to find the option with the lowest impact.
Treading lightly for me has meant I appreciate the items I have more because I understand the resources that have gone into it. I appreciate the food I eat more because I know it has been carefully chosen and prepared for a lower impact. I appreciate the value in my connections to others because ultimately that can have almost no negative impact on our planet at all. It provides me with a sense of presence and gratitude for the world around me.
Try this in your everyday life when choosing to purchase something or throw something away take some extra time and consider how you can do it more consciously and responsibly for the environment.
